dudeLaser Cosmetic Soft Tissue Procedures

The addition of laser technology in dentistry has allowed Dr. Scianni to perform a variety of soft-tissue (gum) procedures to obtain the best cosmetic results possible. The expanded laser treatment capabilities, makes it easier to provide patients with better, faster and more comfortable care.

A soft tissue laser produces highly focused light energy that can be used to manipulate soft tissues in the mouth. Lasers are unique because they can treat targeted tissue while leaving surrounding tissue unaffected. It is this property among others that allows Dr. Scianni to perform very precise procedures. In addition lasers may seal off blood vessels and nerve endings during a procedure lessening bleeding, postoperative pain and swelling. In many cases due to their gentle and precise nature, lasers are used with little or no anesthetic. Lasers can be used for many soft tissue procedures. These procedures include:

  • Gingivectomy (Reshaping or removing gum tissue): This procedure is used for periodontal or aesthetic reasons or in order to gain access to decay. Soft tissue reshaping may be done to gain proper shape and form for teeth and restorations.
  • Crown Lengthening: This procedure is used to reshape gum tissue to help expose healthier tooth structure, providing a stronger foundation for the placement of restorations.
  • Gummy Smile: This procedure is used to reshape gum tissue and improve the appearance of a "gummy” smile (smile showing too much of the gum and not enough of the teeth.
  • Frenectomy (Clipping muscle attachments) This procedure is used to remove a muscle attachment that is interfering with normal speech or causing excessive soft tissue loss (recession) around teeth.
  • Removing Soft Tissue Growths (Fibroma removal): This procedure is used to remove excess tissue or growths that may be an aesthetic or functional issue.
  • Gingivoplasty (Gently removing swollen tissues): This procedure is used to remove excess tissue caused by systemic disease, medication or poor oral hygiene.
  • Soft Tissue Folds (Epulis): This procedure is used for the painless and suture-free removal of soft tissue folds often caused by ill-fitting dentures.
